How Do You Identify a Real Diamond?

Diamonds are among the most precious gemstones in the world. The process of cutting and shaping diamonds is just as significant as the diamond itself. Therefore, taking the decision to purchase one can take some time. Alongside its material value, the emotional significance of the diamond jewelry you wear or gift plays a huge role. It is only natural to want to ensure that the diamond jewelry you select with great care is authentic.

You can verify the authenticity of your diamond in several ways—either through an expert or by using a few simple methods you can try yourself at home. You can find further details and instructions in our Zen guide, which we have compiled for you!

The Scratch Test

The first method is very simple and can be conducted by you at home, although the results may not be 100% reliable.

Diamonds are among the hardest materials in the world and can easily cut and scratch glass. Therefore, a scratch test can be helpful in determining whether a diamond is real. To perform this test, all you need is a glass object. Place the glass on a sturdy surface and scrape the diamond across the glass surface. If the diamond scratches the glass, it is very likely to be authentic. However, keep in mind that the scratch test is not the most reliable method, as other gemstones can leave similar scratches on glass.

The Fog Test

There is another very simple method to find out if your diamond is real, and this method requires nothing more than your breath. Yes, you can test if your diamond is a fake simply by using the fog from your breath. Hold the diamond in your hand and breathe on it. If the fog clears within a second or two, your diamond is likely real. However, if the fog remains for three to four seconds, it could be a fake.

The reason for this is simple: diamonds dissipate heat very quickly, which is why the fog vanishes rapidly. With other materials, the fog lingers longer. For this test to work reliably, your diamond should be clean and free of oil or dirt on its surface.

The Transparency Test

Another method you can easily perform at home is the transparency test. For this, all you need is a newspaper or a sheet of printed paper. Place the diamond flat-side down onto the newspaper or paper. If you can clearly see the letters beneath the diamond, there is a high probability that the stone is a fake. However, if the letters appear blurry or unreadable, this indicates that the diamond is likely real. Ensure the diamond is clean prior to testing.

The Float Test

This method is perhaps the simplest among the various tests. You only need a glass of water. If the diamond is real, it will sink to the bottom of the glass due to the stone's high density. A fake diamond, on the other hand, will float on the water's surface. Even though this test is easy to perform, it is not 100% accurate.

How Are Real Diamonds Certified?

Certified diamonds are examined and tested by experts and gemologists under laboratory conditions to determine their quality.

There are several professional organizations that conduct such evaluations and issue certificates for diamond authenticity. These organizations ensure that tests are performed according to recognized standards and that the results are reliable.

GIA

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has been operating since the 1930s and is one of the pioneers of the fundamental grading systems still used today. Today, the GIA is one of the most trusted and recognized agencies for diamond grading. It is extremely consistent and provides the highest level of confidence when buying a diamond.

AGS

The American Gem Society (AGS), founded in the 1930s, grades diamonds on a scale from 0 to 10, with 0 representing the highest quality and 10 representing the lowest.

IGI

The International Gemological Institute (IGI) certifies diamonds worldwide, focusing primarily on Asia and Europe. Consequently, they are less commonly viewed as a primary source of authority in the US.

Although these and other organizations certify the quality of genuine diamonds, some counterfeit diamonds are accompanied by fake certificates. Therefore, you must exercise great caution when purchasing diamonds, especially from unverified sources and sellers.

Does a Real Diamond Sparkle or Not?

Real diamonds sparkle because they reflect light in a very distinct manner. This sparkle arises from the refraction and reflection of light within the diamond's complex internal structure. A high-quality diamond exhibits this brilliance in shades of white and gray, which indicates the purity and precision of its cut.

The sparkle, also referred to as brilliance, demonstrates how well light is refracted and scattered inside the diamond. A well-cut diamond ensures that light is reflected evenly, resulting in an exceptionally brilliant appearance.

Additionally, diamonds bend light at various angles, producing colorful light effects known as "fire." Fire is the result of the spectral dispersion of light and can often showcase a rainbow of colors.

Get Help from an Expert for the Most Accurate Result!

If you wish to determine the authenticity of a diamond in the best possible way and receive a 100% accurate result, you should seek the assistance of a specialized gemologist.

These experts can thoroughly examine the physical and optical properties of the diamond. With the help of lab testing and analysis, they can precisely determine factors such as cut quality, color grade, clarity, and carat weight. Furthermore, they can verify the diamond's certificates to ensure it originates from trusted sources.

This approach offers the safest way to get a definitive answer. If you would like to find out whether your diamond is real, visit us at one of our Zen Diamond stores and consult with our team of experts!
